Hedge trimming isn’t exactly a fun job. It’s one of those gardening tasks that can really become a chore. Thankfully, a cordless hedge trimmer can make life a lot easier.
One of the biggest problems with hedge trimming using a standard mains-powered electric trimmer is that you’re constantly fighting with the power cable. Firstly, you have to drag it across the garden to get where you want to go, whilst taking care not to drag it across your flower beds and break everything. Once you finally get to the part of the hedge you want to cut, it’s a constant fight with the power cable to keep it from tangling with your arms or your legs, especially if you’re working up a ladder.
All these problems are solved with a battery-powered cordless hedge trimmer.
It’s quick and easy to get one out, take it to where you want to be, and start cutting. This is especially handy with the British weather, where you might only have a small window of opportunity to get out in the garden and do some work before the rain inevitably comes.
They’re also lighter to use, as you’re not fighting with the weight of the power cable. In addition, the DC motors in cordless hedge trimmers tend to be lighter than the AC motors in mains-powered ones, reducing the weight further. This is something that you’ll be glad of when holding one up at arm’s length for a long period of time.
The cordless hedge trimmers that I’d like to tell you about today come from Gtech, a British company founded in 2001 by Nick Grey, the former Head of Product Development with the VAX vacuum cleaner company.
Gtech sell their products in 19 countries Worldwide, and to date have sold over 22 million products.
Gtech HT20 Cordless Hedge Trimmer
The Gtech HT20 is powered by an 18V DC motor, and uses a belt-drive system. This makes it extremely lightweight, at only 2.25kg. This lightness means that tall hedges and bushes can be cut using its long handle, without the risk or inconvenience of working from a ladder.
The head of the trimmer adjusts through a 135 degree angle, which makes it easy to get the tops of hedges flat, even when working from down below.
The supplied trimmer blade can cut through branches up to 15mm thick, but you can also buy an optional circular saw-type branch cutter, if you wish to tackle even larger jobs.
The Lithium-ion battery in the HT20 hedge trimmer gives you 45 minutes of work time from a 4 hour charge, and you can also buy additional batteries to increase the available work time.
Gtech HT05-Plus Extendable Cordless Hedge Trimmer
The Gtech HT05-Plus is the latest addition to their cordless hedge trimmer range.
It comes with a slighter smaller 14.4V motor than the HT20, but this makes the HT05-Plus lighter, at just 1.7kg.
With the smaller motor, you still only get 45 minutes of work time from a single charge, but the recharge time has now been reduced to 3 hours.
The biggest advantage of the HT05-Plus being lighter is that it has an extendable telescopic handle that is 1.7 metres (nearly 6 foot) long. This allows you to trim hedges up to 10 feet tall without too much strain on your arms.
The HT05-Plus has a slightly smaller maximum cutting thickness than the HT20, at 12mm, and it can’t be fitted with an optional branch cutter, but the price is about £30 cheaper than the standard HT20.
