With Spring now here, it’s time to take a look some cordless garden tools such as lawn mowers, grass trimmers, and hedge trimmers.
Most people don’t want to let their garden get overgrown or messy, but sometimes the tools available don’t make garden maintenance that convenient. Petrol garden tools can be noisy, dirty, and smelly, whilst traditional electric garden tools have cumbersome cables that can make it awkward to reach distant hedges or far corners of the lawn.
That’s where the latest range of modern cordless garden tools come in. They’re electric, so they’re relatively quiet and clean, but they’re not restricted by cables, so they’re quick and easy to use for keeping the garden under control.
If you’ve only got an hour of dry weather before the rain comes, there’s no reason to put off those garden jobs until another day because it’s too much trouble to set the lawnmower or strimmer up. Just grab your cordless tool, and you’re out there and working within minutes.
Cordless garden tools also often tend to be a bit lighter than their petrol or mains powered counterparts, so if you find it a bit of a strain on your back or arms to use a traditional lawn mower, hedge trimmer, or grass trimmer, a lightweight cordless model might be ideal for you.
With this in mind, I’d like to tell you about this great range of cordless garden tools from a British company called Gtech.
Gtech was founded in 2001 by Nick Grey, who was the former Head of Product Development at vacuum cleaner manufacturer VAX. To date, Gtech has sold over 22 million products in 19 countries.
Cordless Lawn Mower
Gtech Falcon Cordless Lawnmower
The Gtech Falcon is powered by a 36V Lithium-ion battery that is said to give it up to 40 minutes of run time. Apparently, that’s enough to mow a 384m2 (4,132ft2) lawn, or, to put it another way, enough to mow the average garden twice on a single charge.
In addition to a powerful motor and a lightweight design, the Gtech Falcon also has carbon steel blades, and a large 40 litre collection bin that indicates when it’s full.
The cutting height is easily adjustable from 3cm to 8cm in 1cm increments using a handy selection lever on top of the mower.
When you’re finished with the mower, the handle folds down flat for easy storage, and the battery is removable, so that it can be put on charge.
The typical time for a full recharge of the battery is 5 hours, so, even with a single battery, you can still mow both the front and rear lawns in the same day. Of course, spare batteries are also available though.
Cordless Hedge Trimmers
Gtech HT20 Cordless Hedge Trimmer
The Gtech HT20 is powered by an 18V motor, with a belt-drive system. This makes it extremely light, weighing in at only 2.25kg, so tall hedges and bushes can be cut using the long handle, without having to work from a ladder.
The head of the trimmer adjusts through a 135 degree angle, making it easier to get the tops of hedges flat, even when working from down below.
The trimmer blade will cut through branches up to 15mm thick, and there’s also an optional circular saw-type branch cutter available to buy, to tackle those even larger jobs.
The Lithium-ion battery in the HT20 trimmer gives you 45 minutes of work time from a 4 hour charge.
Gtech HT05-Plus Extendable Cordless Hedge Trimmer
The Gtech HT05-Plus is the latest addition to their hedge trimmer range.
It comes with a slighter smaller 14.4V motor than the HT20, but this makes the HT05-Plus lighter, at just 1.7kg.
The smaller motor still only gives 45 minutes of work time from a single charge, but now the recharge time has been reduced to 3 hours.
The biggest advantage of the HT05-Plus being lighter is that it has an extendable telescopic 1.7 metre (nearly 6 foot) handle, which allows you to trim hedges up to 10 feet high without too much strain on your arms.
The HT05-Plus has a slightly smaller maximum cutting thickness than the HT20, at 12mm, and it can’t be fitted with an optional branch cutter, but it is about £30 cheaper.
Cordless Grass Trimmer
Gtech ST20 Cordless Grass Trimmer
Like the other Gtech products, the ST20 Grass Trimmer is designed to make garden maintenance easier, and it helps accomplish this with a weight of just 1.75kg.
In addition to the light weight, the adjustable handle and cutting head mean there’s less strain on the arms and back, making garden work a lot more fun.
The Gtech ST20 Grass Trimmer is powered by an 18V motor and Lithium-ion battery, which gives a 30 minute run time from a 4 hour charge, and , of course, you can buy additional batteries, if you wish.
